The Power of Giving Thanks

Gratitude is an expression of appreciation for all we have in addition to being an affirmation of goodness and warmth.1

This Thanksgiving, there are so many things for which to be grateful: our families, our health, and our successes. I know this year has presented several different challenges to me personally and my family, pictured above. But we have made it a habit to practice gratitude in our household and tell God something that we are thankful for every night. It truly does make a huge difference when you make a conscious effort to focus on what you are grateful for.

Here are some ways you can express gratitude this Thanksgiving:

  • Pass the gratitude basket. Give everyone around your table a blank sheet of paper and a pen. Ask them to write down one thing they’re grateful for then put it in the basket. Then, pass the basket around and have people read others’ gratitude notes. You can then guess who wrote which one.2

  • Put together a Thanksgiving scrapbook. Take a blank scrapbook and put in photos of family and friends who have gathered throughout the year; photos of all of the food served; add notes about special things that happened that day; recipes for the dishes and notes about who created each dish. Ask each person to write in the book what they are thankful for.2

  • Be grateful to yourself. You can also compliment yourself. Make a list of ways you’ve impressed yourself lately – say it by looking in the mirror, writing it in a journal, or jotting it on a sticky note and placing it on your desk or dashboard in your car.

Speaking of gratitude, all of us at Dodds Wealth are truly grateful for all of our clients and that have chosen to work with us. We hope your Thanksgiving is full of gratitude, good cheer, and delicious food.

Happy Thanksgiving!
