As we gather with friends & family this 4th of July may we all be reminded of the cost of freedom. Freedom isn’t really free. We enjoy the benefits of it, but it is always costly. I think of the sacrifice of those who fought for us whether it be for the Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War, World Wars I &II, or the D-Day Invasion in Normandy, France for which a high price was paid to lives lost for families and loved ones.
I am grateful for those who have protected and helped to defend our democracy pledging their loyalty, love, faith, and belief in our country. The Declaration of Independence which was adopted by Congress on July 4, 1776 and later on August 2 signed into law took courage for the 56 men that signed it. Probably most of us remember the most famous line “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among those are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Freedom originally came from God who has always given us the privilege to choose for ourselves whom we will serve in our lifetime. My favorite quote from one of our founding Fathers, George Washington, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor.”
As we see the flags all on display throughout our land may we be reminded of the privilege and honor we have in our country to be an American. Let’s let freedom ring because we still live in the land of the free and the home of the brave!
